Art and design: Two disciplines, one intersection

Art and design have traditionally been considered distinct disciplines, each with its own purpose. While art is an expression of the human being , materialized through each artist's unique language (style, technique, or medium), design focuses on solving problems aesthetically and functionally , using a universal language.

Where is the difference?

An artist can depict a chair without worrying about its structure, its industrial manufacture, or its materiality. Their interest lies in conveying a concept: the chair as an object of relaxation, as an everyday element in human history, or as a symbol of power. In this process, the artist enjoys absolute freedom .

On the other hand, design also starts from a concept, but uses it to respond to specific problems . Following the example of the chair, the key questions would be: Is it comfortable? Can it be stacked? How much does it cost to manufacture? Design, unlike art, evolves according to needs , adapting to new technical and functional challenges.

Can art and design merge?

Sometimes, reflecting on the boundaries between art and design isn't as relevant as the possibility of combining them. A classic example is Philippe Starck 's Juicy Salif juicer , a piece that, while not the best juicer, works perfectly as an iconic design sculpture .

At ANKA Taller , we had the opportunity to experience this intersection of art and design by collaborating with Chilean artist La Molisha . The project involved an intervention on a Pliego Chair , transforming a functional object into an artistic expression.

This type of collaboration allows us to explore new dimensions of design, where the object transcends its function and becomes a piece of art with its own meaning. Because in the end, design also communicates, excites, and transforms spaces , just like art.
